A new study has revealed shocking ignorance of road signs among UK drivers.

After government data revealed that there were more than 170,000 crashes on British roads in 2017, private number plate provider Click4reg.co.uk carried out a survey into motorists’ knowledge to find out if a lack of understanding was contributing to collisions.

It found that a worrying 62 per cent of drivers couldn’t correctly identify the no entry sign – one of the most commonly used signs on British roads – and one of the most important.

It also found gaps in recognition of several other common signs as well as a few less common but equally important ones.

Without spoiling the quiz, the trickiest sign baffled more than three-quarters (79 per cent) of respondents, and the six least recognised signs each caught out more than half of the drivers questioned..
