Saints will face either Livingston or St Mirren – who play their semi-final on Sunday – back at Hampden next month after goals from Jason Kerr, Shaun Rooney and Craig Conway gave them a stunning victory over Jack Ross’ shell-shocked Hibees.

It is the first time since 1998 that St Johnstone have reached this stage of the tournament and Davidson is delighted his players are now in a position to get their hands on silverware.

“When these chances come you’ve got to try and take it. I said that to the players today – and I thought they did,” said Davidson.

“We’ve put ourselves in the position now where we’ve got an opportunity. The Old Firm dominated for years and they aren’t there. It’s difficult to say how being in the final as as manager will compare to the Scottish Cup final when I was assistant.

“I was just worried about this game and I can look forward to the final now. I always say a semi-final is just a game to get to the final and give yourself a chance of winning the trophy and I’m delighted for the players more than anyone else.

“They have performed a lot better than results have shown this season, but we showed in the second half we are a good team and we can play well and I’m so pleased for them.

“We probably got the little bit of work we haven’t had this season. We’ve had goals going in off the back of heads but we dug in. Zander pulled off a great save and a couple of times the woodwork saved us.

“I thought Hibs were good but I also think we got our goals at just the right time. For me, I’m pleased to see us get two set-play goals. We’ve not had enough of them this season. Two fantastic headers and they gave us a real good platform for the rest of the game.”
