Wolfson dips as Apple takes a bite out of Samsung

APPLE has moved quickly to capitalise on its court victory against Samsung by seeking a ban on eight phones made by its rival. Shares in Samsung’s suppliers, including Edinburgh-based Wolfson, also took a tumble yesterday.

A federal jury awarded Apple $1 billion (£650 million) in damages on Friday after finding Samsung guilty of copying technology used in the iPhone and iPad. Apple now wants the sale of some Samsung phones – including the popular Galaxy S2 – to be banned, although the latest S3 model is not included in the firm’s list.

Shares in firms that supply the South Korean company with components fell as traders in London got their first chance to react to Apple’s victory after Monday’s bank holiday.

Wolfson closed down 7.4 per cent, or 16.75p, to 209p, while ARM Holdings ended the day off 3p at 576p. Earlier this month Wolfson revealed it is supplying audio chips for Samsung’s S3.
