'Uncertainties, opportunities and challenges' to be discussed at Scotsman Investment Conference next month

This year’s Scotsman Investment Conference is set to take place next month online for the first time – and examine the uncertainties, opportunities and challenges ahead.

The event takes place on Tuesday, March 30, from 2pm to 3:45pm – you can sign up here. It is being sponsored by Martin Currie Global Portfolio Trust and Rathbones – and hosted by David Lee of Scotsman Conferences.

He said: “Investors could be forgiven for a sense of bewilderment after a whirlwind 2020. When the pandemic battered global markets, some commentators feared the impacts could be more devastating than the global financial crash – but the bounceback has been nothing short of remarkable.

“However, early in 2021, so many uncertainties remain in the new abnormal, as investors seek to steer a course through uncharted waters,” he added, also stating that the “uncertainties, opportunities and challenges ahead”, in the short, medium and long term, will be addressed at the conference by a panel of three experts, as follows.

Zehrid Osmani, portfolio manager at Martin Currie Global Portfolio Trust, will address why it is so vital to remember the fundamentals of investing, whatever the scale of the challenges thrown at us.

David Coombs, head of multi-asset investments at Rathbones, will look specifically at the healthcare sector, which has come to the fore in the past year in terms of our pandemic response. He will talk discuss “fiscal tightening, waistband loosening: what next for investing in the healthcare sector?”

They will be joined by Iona Bain of Young Money, a writer, speaker, broadcaster and blogger specialising in young finances, who examines what is driving the millennial investment boom, the dangers of the investing internet and how millennials might shape future trends.

Last year’s event – which took place at The Sheraton hotel in Edinburgh – set out to examine the outlook for global markets, asking how investors could best position themselves amid changing central bank policies and climate change, and whether it was possible to “finally look beyond the doom and gloom of Brexit and see UK equity growth”.

Zehrid Osmani’s chosen topic was global markets and growth megatrends, while David Coombs’ session came under the heading “Riding the Rapids”.
