TalkTalk hiring 500

PHONE and broadband company TalkTalk is hiring 500 engineers to cope with anticipated demand for its new YouView television service, and avoid the chaos that accompanied its introduction of free broadband six years ago.

At that time, TalkTalk could not cope with demand. But chief executive Dido Harding said the group had learnt its lesson for the launch of YouView, which is being targeted at 11 million homes with Freeview.

Harding said: “This will be the first time that TalkTalk engineers have gone into people’s homes. We want to make sure that they’re the right people with the right manner as well as appropriate skills.”

One source said: “TalkTalk has poached some Sky engineers who got fed up climbing up ladders and on roofs to fit dishes in the wettest summer on record. You don’t have to do this with YouView as it is delivered via broadband.”
