Superdry owner reveals jump in first-quarter sales

Fashion retailer SuperGroup, owner of the Superdry label, today reported a 25.7 per cent surge in revenues to £75 million for the first three months of its financial year.

The group said total retail revenues grew 17.6 per cent to £53.2m in the first quarter, with like-for-like sales at its own stores and online channel up 8.5 per cent.

During the 13 weeks to 28 July, the chain moved one Superdry store in Glasgow to a larger site within the Silverburn shopping centre, and since the end of the quarter has opened a further four branches across the UK.

Wholesale revenues soared 50.8 per cent to £21.8m, while orders for its autumn and winter ranges are up 26 per cent on last year.

Chief executive Julian Dunkerton said the strong growth in the order book provided further evidence of the “enduring appeal of our brand”, which is popular among celebrities such as David Beckham and Pippa Middleton.

SuperGroup’s network of franchised stores grew by 12 outlets to a total of 154, with openings in Austria, France and Taiwan, and the retailer recently signed deals with new franchise partners in Singapore and Turkey.

Dunkerton said: “Whilst there is still much to do this year, this performance coupled with our continuing international expansion, in particular the signing of the two new major partners, gives me confidence in our ability to continue to meet expectations as we head into the autumn period.”
