Small boost for construction

Growth in the construction sector slowed during March, according to figures released today by data-gathering firm Glenigan, following a dip in the number of commercial property projects getting under way.

However, the number of projects for housing associations increased last month, with refit and refurbishment work also giving the industry a boost.

James Abraham, an economist at Glenigan, said: “Several large repair or refurbishment contracts commenced in the first quarter but this spike will not continue over the next few quarters and we expect the overall level of social housing building to fall this year.”
