Scots SME staff ‘most gloomy’

Employees across Scotland’s small businesses are among the most pessimistic in the UK, new figures today suggest.

A study by invoice finance specialist Bibby Financial Services found just 11 per cent of SME owners and managers saw a rise in motivation levels among their staff in the first quarter of this year – down from 28 per cent in the previous quarter.

It found employees in London were the most upbeat, with 42 per cent of owners and managers saying their staff were more positive.

Despite the gloomy mood among Scotland’s workers, owners were more upbeat. Some 52 per cent said they were “hopeful for the future” – up from 38 per cent in the final quarter of 2011.
