Scots keen to work past retirement date

SCOTS on the brink of retirement are keener than ever to continue working, new research shows.

Of the 51 per cent of Scots who say they would consider working past their state pension date this year, 45 per cent want to stay in employment so they can boost their retirement incomes. Another 44 per cent would carry on working for the enjoyment of it, with one in six uncomfortable with the prospect of being at home all the time in retirement, according to a Prudential survey.

The insurer’s latest Class of 2013 report found that Scots nearing state pension age are increasingly willing to postpone their retirement, whether it means continuing in full-time employment or going part-time. One in ten considering working on would like to make money from a pastime and 5 per cent want to start their own business.

Stan Russell, retirement income expert at Prudential, said: “Retiring at 60 or 65 years old is no longer a financial reality for many people”.
