Scot runs top Aberdeen-Angus herd

Aberdeen-Angus herds in Scotland and Wales have claimed the top two places in the annual Aberdeen-Angus suckler herd of the year awards.

Both herds of pure-bred Aberdeen-Angus are run on strictly commercial lines with ease of calving, low maintenance on home-grown forages and strong market demand being cited as reasons for choosing the breed.

Overall winners are Alex and Wendy Sanger, whose 200-cow pedigree herd at Prettycur, Montrose, Angus, produces finished steers which are sold under the Glenbervie Aberdeen-Angus brand to Montrose butcher Neil Watt and Scotbeef at Bridge of Allan.

Runner-up Deio Hughes runs a herd of 207 Aberdeen-Angus cows at Ty Mawr Farms, Gynedd, with all calves - except heifers retained for breeding - sold as stores on a price per kg basis to nearby Rhug Estate for finishing.
