£1bn town plan gains approval from planners

A WEST Lothian development promising thousands of new homes has moved a step closer after gaining planning permission in principle from the local council.

The £1 billion scheme at Winchburgh, to the west of Edinburgh, has been several years in the planning. Covering almost 900 acres, it ranks as one of the UK’s biggest residential and mixed-use projects.

As well as some 3,500 homes, the development is set to include five schools, shopping facilities, a train station and parkland.

Sigma Capital Group, the finance and urban regeneration specialist, said yesterday that the masterplan had been given the nod by West Lothian Council. A detailed planning application for the first phase of 177 homes will now be submitted for approval. Sigma said it had already secured contracts on behalf of the developer, Regenco Trading, with builders Barratt and Miller.
