Munro Travel in top gear on back of energy surge

High-flying energy executives have helped a 108-year-old Aberdeen travel business post record turnover.

Munro's Travel Group said it was on track to exceed its 2011 growth targets after turnover hit 45 million last year. That figure is set to jump by more than 10 per cent by the close of the current financial year.

The independent agent - founded in 1903 - said it had seen "significant" growth in its core business of providing travel management services to energy sector companies around the world.

The company has also boosted its workforce by about a fifth to help service its growing client portfolio. Its headcount in the Granite City now stands at 100.

Managing partner Murray Burnett said: "In the past 12 months, we are fortunate to have experienced a sustained period of increased activity from our existing customer base, as energy companies across the board experience an upturn in activity in key international oil and gas hubs.

"With the prospect of a number of potential major contracts arising in the coming months, we anticipate further growth including consideration of expanding into new geographic areas in line with the industry's needs."

Munro's operates two specialist divisions encompassing business travel, and groups and conferences.
