Money fears top list of barriers for start-ups

MONEY worries are the biggest barrier to would-be entrepreneurs in Scotland starting their own company, a study has found.

The state-backed Start Up Loans Company said 41 per cent of Scots put financial fears at the top of their concerns, with other hurdles cited including a lack of knowledge and experience, family commitments and not knowing where to turn for business advice.

Start Up Loans chief executive Tim Sawyer said: “Financial fears are always going to be a part of starting a business, but people should know that more and more help is available to alleviate funding pressure.

“There is a misconception that you have to be a business expert to start your own company. But this isn’t the case.

“Our job is to educate and empower people with the resources needed to start a business, including mentoring support and help with drafting a business plan.”
