Methane leak halts coal production

UK COAL yesterday said it was suspending production at its Kellingley deep mine in Yorkshire, which employs 200 miners, until mid-December after methane gas escaping from a waste area began to ignite.

The suspension will reduce output from Kellingley by between 100,000 and 200,000 tonnes for 2010. The company said production will resume once the source of the gas has been found and the problem resolved.
