Lerwick harbour cashes in on oil

AN INCREASE in work for the oil and gas industry led to an 82 per cent year-on-year leap in the number of boats using Lerwick harbour during the first three months of the year.

The Shetland port was visited by 127 vessels, with the amount of cargo handled up 102.7 per cent to 24,254 tonnes.

Victor Sandison, the port’s deputy chief executive, said: “Increasing oil-related activity again demonstrated the value of the investment in deep-water infrastructure, including the latest berth at Greenhead, which was brought into use ahead of schedule in February to support a major North Sea project.”
