Leak targets met despite the weather

United Utilities yesterday praised the "extraordinary efforts" of staff who battled extreme weather to ensure the company met its annual leakage target.

Between Christmas and New Year, it received 40,000 calls reporting burst pipes - ten times the usual level - in an "unprecedented" period. It met its 2010-11 leakage benchmark of 464 megalitres a day.
