Lady Susan Rice appointed president of Scottish Council for Development and Industry

LADY Susan Rice, managing director of Lloyds Banking Group Scotland, has been appointed president of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI).

Rice, who also chairs the Remuneration Committee of Scottish and Southern Energy and who will continue her functions at Lloyds, takes over the role from the late Campbell Christie, the former general secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress who died last year.

Rice said SCDI was a “terrific” organisation. “People talk about them as being the leading economic development organisation outside of government,” she said.

“With the range of organisations which are members and the geographic spread, it really seems to have done something right.

“It is a good, stable, highly respected organisation.”

The position is non-remunerated, and is in addition to the chairman’s role, held by Robert Armour, who was formerly general counsel at British Energy, and Lesley Sawers, the body’s chief executive.

Armour said: “We are delighted to welcome Lady Rice as SCDI’s first female president. At this critical time for Scotland, SCDI will see great benefits from Lady Rice’s leadership and experience in delivering a sustainable and prosperous economic future for Scotland.”

SCDI represents 1,200 members including corporates, small firms, public sector bodies, trade unions, charities and faith groups.
