John Lewis sales edge up 0.7%

SALES at department store chain John Lewis edged up 0.7 per cent in the week to 11 June as the company came up against tough comparisons last year, when customers bought televisions ahead of the World Cup.

Edinburgh was one of the few branches to post positive sales figures, up 0.1 per cent, but Glasgow fell 1.4 per cent and Aberdeen slumped 9.4 per cent.

The employee-owned company's lacklustre sales in recent weeks have sparked further concerns among economists about a slowdown in consumer spending.
