Hydrogen power firm ITM Power in Aberdeen move

THE FIRM that makes hydrogen fuel cells is opening a base in Aberdeen in a bid to tap “a critical mass of opportunities” arising from the growing Scottish renewables industry.

Aim-quoted ITM Power said it decided to open the office, which will be located within council buildings, following the recent All-Energy conference in the city.

The Sheffield-based company will initially have just a small sales operation in Aberdeen but its chief executive Graham Cooley said it would look into setting up a plant north of the Border should it secure ”one large or several smaller” contracts.

He said the city was ideally placed to be at the forefront of hydrogen fuel development because of its energy expertise and the Scottish Government’s strong commitment to renewable energy. Hydrogen is a clean fuel if it is made from renewable energy and can be used to store power from unreliable sources such as wind.

“The Scottish renewables sector is growing at an astonishing rate with many opportunities for energy storage and clean transport fuel,” Cooley said. “ITM Power is determined to make an early commitment to Aberdeen and Scotland.”
