High street plea for help

RETAIL chiefs have called for greater government support for the independent sector in the face of shop closures and increased competition from the big chains.

The British Retail Consortium is backing National Independents Week, with director general Stephen Robertson noting the "crucial" role of small shops in successful communities.

What high street retailers need now, he said, is assistance from local and central government to bring down costs while improving access and investment.

"Independents make a vital contribution to local communities and economies - providing jobs and essential services," he said. "They're a crucial part of our national retail mix but in some cases they, and the high streets they occupy, are in trouble."

After the news this month that Mary Portas is fronting the government's high street review in England and Wales, the BRC is seeking a look into business rates and rents, ways of improving high street infrastructure and reducing crime, and improving access for customers and deliveries.

National Independents Week is organised by the Federation of Wholesale Distributors as part of the "My Shop Is Your Shop" campaign to highlight the advantages of shopping locally. Participatants offer discounts on top brands and in-store events.
