Greggs unveils motorway services drive

Bakery chain Greggs is hitting the road after yesterday unveiling a motorway service station deal.

Moto, the former Granada motorway services business, will operate a pair of Greggs franchises as part of a 12-month trial, with the first due to open in December at Lymm in Cheshire.

If the trial is successful then Moto – which has 45 UK sites, including Kinross, Musselburgh and Stirling – could roll out the franchise to 30 of its stations.

The company already has franchise agreements in place with Burger King and Costa Coffee, with some of its sites also sporting Marks & Spencer, Domino’s Pizza and WH Smith outlets.

Ken McMeikan, Greggs’ Scots-born chief executive, said: “We are delighted to team up with Moto in the motorway services market.

“It is an excellent operator and I hope this will be the beginning of a long and successful relationship.

“Making Greggs even more accessible to consumers as they travel will, I hope, be welcomed by both existing and new customers of Greggs.”

The bakery chain already has more than 1,500 outlets.
