In a blog posted on the Dundee company’s website, Garrett-Cox said Alliance Trust “stands for independence of thought, innovation, focusing on relationships, championing clarity and carefully managing our social impact.”

The chief executive added: “Based on both its track record and our interaction with them, I seriously question whether Elliott can say it stands for the same things.”

Elliott, which holds a 12 per cent stake in Alliance, wants three finance veterans to be appointed to the board to help improve its performance.
