There are different ways to apply for British citizenship based on your circumstances.

If you were born in the UK, you don't automatically get British citizenship, depending on when you were born and your parents’ circumstances; you may need to apply for citizenship.

For those who have moved to the UK, there are a number of routes to citizenship.

Indefinite leave to remain

You can usually apply for indefinite leave to remain after you’ve lived in the UK for five years – then you can apply for citizenship.

Settled status

If you and your family member are from the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you can apply for ‘settled status’ after you’ve lived in the UK for 5 years. To then apply for citizenship with settled status, you must usually have lived in the UK for 12 months after getting it.

Permanent residence status

If you or a family member are from the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland, you usually get permanent residence status automatically after living in the UK for five years. To apply for citizenship with permanent residence status, you must usually have lived in the UK for 12 months after getting permanent residence status.

To apply as the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen, you must have lived in the UK for the last three years. You’ll also need to have indefinite leave to remain, settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or a permanent residence document to confirm you have permanent residence status.

You may be eligible to apply for citizenship if: you have a British parent; you have another type of British nationality; you’re stateless; or you previously gave up your citizenship.

You’ll have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions about British traditions and customs and you have to score 75 per cent or more to pass the test.

If you fail, you have to wait a week before taking the test again, but you can take the test as many times as you need to – just bear in mind that you need to book and pay again each time.
