Did Trainspotting cause more drug users?
Could there be a link between Scotland’s Trainspotting generation and long term addiction problems? Official figures have shown that the number of hospital stays linked to “opioids” such as methadone and heroin, has risen fivefold since 1996/97.
Drug-related hospitalization remained steady amongst under-25s, but there was a significant rise among older users, with an elevenfold increase in admissions of those aged 40 to 44 years old.

The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service has said that keeping up with supplies of blood has been a constant demand. With more than 190,000 individual donations of blood needed over the next six months to keep pace, worry is starting to build.

What is Scottish unemployment sitting at?
There has been another rise in Scotland of unemployment, bringing the new total to 170,000 people out of work. This worrying rise makes Scotland only one of two regions in the whole of the UK to have experienced a rise - the other being the North East of England.
The Scottish unemployment rate is now sitting at 6.1 per cent - higher than the UK average of 5.4 per cent.
