Families share trips to cut costs of holidays

Holidays are becoming a group activity once again as more people choose go away with family or friends in an attempt to cut costs.

More than a third of holidaymakers opt to share their trips with their friends or extended family, according to a survey by Aviva.

It said the proportion was far higher than a decade ago, pointing to the growing desire to share the cost burden, including childcare expenses and responsibilities.

One in five people said they had been able to go on holiday for free by travelling with friends or family. People aged between 35 and 44 are as likely to take the opportunity to go on an
all-expenses paid trip as those in the 25 to 34 category.

Large group holidays tend to take place over Christmas and Hogmanay, when the primary motivation is to spend quality time together, the research found. Beach holidays are the most popular option, with few people sharing cultural or sightseeing trips with friends or family.
