Enterprise finds reason for cheer

The UK’s biggest pub landlord has toasted better sales as the Diamond Jubilee and Euro 2012 football tournament helped persuade punters to brave the record rainfall.

Enterprise Inns, which has some 6,000 leasehold and tenanted pubs south of the Border, said like-for-like income in the 44 weeks to 4 August for the total estate was down by 1.2 per cent, compared with a decline of 1.6 per cent in the first half and a slide of 5.1 per cent for the same period last year.

The Solihull-based group said it was encouraging that sales improved during a period of bad weather, helped by the Jubilee celebrations and European football championship. However, the firm concedes that this year’s poor summer weather has
“undoubtedly affected trade for our publicans in the near term”.
