Drought-hit Tanzania calls on Aggreko

TEMPORARY power supplier Aggreko yesterday landed a $37 million (£23m) deal to supply emergency energy to the Tanzania Electric Supply Company over the next 12 months.

More than two-thirds of Tanzania's electricity is hydro- powered and the prolonged drought besetting East Africa has led to power rationing.

The Glasgow-based company will supply 100 megawatts of emergency power, taking its order intake for the first six months of 2011 to 630MW.

Aggreko chief executive Rupert Soames said: "Having successfully delivered 40MW of emergency power between 2006 and 2008, we are delighted that, following a competitive tender process, we have once again been selected to be of service to Tanzania."

The latest contract involves providing two 50MW diesel-powered generators at Ubungo and Tegeta, as well as managing the fuel supply associated with the power generation. The fuel contract is similar to an ongoing deal in neighbouring Uganda.
