Commsworld broadens network with key hire

Edinburgh-based telecommunications network provider Comms­world has marked a year of expansion with a senior appointment to oversee one of the firm's key contracts.

Jen Wilson joins the priv­ately owned firm from outsourcing giant Capita and will lead the delivery of 400 wide area networks (WANs) to schools, libraries and other council buildings in the capital. The work is being done under contract with CGI, a key provider in the £186 million City of Edinburgh Council ICT project.

Her appointment is the latest in a series of new hires at Commsworld, where the headcount has grown by more than a third to 63 during the past 12 months. Nearly 40 per cent of new recruits have been women.

“The sector has for so long been male-dominated, but there is no reason for that to be the case,” said Wilson, who has worked in the IT industry for more than 20 years.

“It is a matter of diversity – a range of backgrounds is absolutely essential in any industry to instil a broader range of thinking.”

Co-founded in 1994 by Ricky Nicol and Dave ­McKenzie, Commsworld’s annual revenues run to nearly £10m.

It has offices in Aberdeen and Glasgow, and customers in a variety of industries such as the ­legal, retailing and drinks sectors.
