Busiest May ever at Edinburgh Airport

EDINBURGH Airport has recorded its busiest-ever May after handling more than 906,000 passengers last month.

Traffic at the airport, owned by Global Infrastructure Partners, rose 7.4 per cent compared to the same month last year, boosted by an increase in international flights.

Chief executive Gordon Dewar said: “The team here has put in a tremendous amount of work and in May we saw all of that work bear fruit.”

An uplift in services to Europe also helped rival Glasgow airport eke out growth of 1 per cent to 665,000 passengers in May. Parent company Heathrow – formerly called BAA – also said passenger numbers at Aberdeen Airport rose 3.1 per cent to 307,000 last month.

• The shortfall in British Airways’ two main pension schemes has widened to £3.3 billion, from £3.2bn three years ago, although the carrier insisted it is on track to repay the deficit.
