Bundestag rejects £750m Opel appeal

THE German government has turned down a request from GM's Opel unit for £750 million in loan guarantees from a fund for companies hit by the economic crisis.

Chancellor Angela Merkel will now discuss alternative support from the four German regions which host Opel plants together employing 24,000 people. Several governors have already indicated they are willing to help secure jobs.
