Brown sauce popularity on the up

THE popularity of brown sauce is on the increase, a new report has revealed. Sales rocketed by 9 per cent in 2011 as it took pride of place in 58 per cent of British kitchen cupboards.

Accounting for almost a fifth of all thick and thin sauces sold in the UK, experts from research firm Mintel claimed sales of brown sauces have received a boost following recent new product development.

Amy Lloyd, senior food analyst at Mintel, said: “Brown sauce has been the surprise star performer of the table sauces market, bucking the downward sales trend experienced by other sauces. The rise in sales of brown sauce shows how a traditional product can be reinvigorated and perform extremely well in a market where sales of other products are remaining the same or slipping.”
