Britvic’s still drinks have little sparkle

Robinsons and Tango maker Britvic yesterday said profits fell at its UK still drinks division after weak demand from pubs hit sales.

The arm, which includes Fruit Shoot and J20, suffered a 3.2 per cent decline in sales to £493.5 million in the year to 2 October after industry figures showed volumes of still drinks sold in pubs declined 10 per cent over the summer.

Disappointing weather also impacted sales of Robinsons during Wimbledon fortnight and led to fewer barbecues and summer occasions at which its drinks could be enjoyed, while shoppers also traded down to cheaper alternatives.

Profits from the division fell 11.2 per cent to £150.1m as it absorbed some of its rising costs to help stimulate demand. The decline in the stills division was partly offset by rising profits through its UK fizzy drinks business.
