Barr Construction wins £35m Sainsbury's deals

BARR Construction, the Paisley-based builder, has won £35 million worth of contracts with Sainsbury's as the supermarket giant expands north of the Border.

The firm's retail division will construct two new outlets, oversee two store extensions and one conversion for Sainsbury's.

It will also be responsible for the construction of the grocery retailer's convenience shop programme throughout Scotland.

Barr has recently completed a 30,000 square foot store in Strathaven, south Lanarkshire, and will start work this summer on a 25,000sqft store in Hawick, Roxburghshire.

The company will add an extra 25,000sqft to the existing Sainsbury's store in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, and extend the supermarket's outlet in Darnley, Glasgow. The Darnley outlet will have an 100,000sqft sales floor on completion in October, making it Sainsbury's largest store in Scotland. Barr will also convert an existing Somerfield store at Saltburn, north Yorkshire.

Barr Construction managing director Barclay Chalmers said: "These contracts represent a significant amount of work for our retail division and they have helped to strengthen our order book.

"Our retail division is going from strength to strength, despite the current downturn within the construction industry, and it is well-placed to support Sainsbury's expansion plans due to its extensive experience in delivering similar retail projects."

Richard Rust, Sainsbury's head of delivery and construction, said: "We have ambitious plans for Scotland and are committed to increasing the number of Scottish stores in the next two or three years."

Sainsbury's latest expansion plans are focused primarily in Scotland and the north of England. It said in November it had planning consents for 50 new stores and remained on track for previously-flagged space growth of 15 per cent over two years.
