Average rent in Scotland rises by 2.6% to £644

The cost of renting a home in Scotland continued to edge up in the first three months of 2012 as demand for family properties rose sharply.

The average rent in Scotland went up by 2.6 per cent to £644 in the first quarter after further price increases in all of the major cities, according to new figures from Citylets.

But there are signs that the recent excess of demand over supply is tailing off in Glasgow and Edinburgh, suggesting the rate of rent increases for smaller properties is set to ease.

The most expensive rents are in Aberdeen, where the cost of a three-bed flat now averages £1,200. The typical monthly rent in Edinburgh went up by 2.9 per cent, with demand for family homes pushing up the cost of a three-bedroom home by 5 per cent to £1,028 a month.

Two-bed rents in the capital averaged £720 a month but took seven days longer to let out than a year earlier.

The cost of renting a three-bed place in Glasgow soared by 10.6 per cent to £832.
