Bilfinger Salamis said it was making a long-term investment in the North-east after taking the wraps off a multi-million-pound logistics and operations base in Aberdeen.

The maintenance, modifications and services contractor has opened a new 27,000-square-foot operations and logistics site in the Granite City.

Bilfinger at The Core will operate as the company’s northern hub for all equipment, plant and materials logistics to service onshore and offshore sites throughout the UK.

The new facility, which will have office space for 70 employees when Covid-19 restrictions ease, will house the company’s technology and digitalisation hub, conferencing facilities and dedicated practical training rooms for delivering product trials and customer demonstrations.

It will also include a dedicated unit for maintaining the firm’s large fleet of advanced inspection and rope access kit.

The investment, which the company pledged in 2019, follows a number of key contract renewals that the business secured in the second half of 2020. Those included multi-year agreements to deliver fabric maintenance and inspection services for two major North Sea operators.

Sandy Bonner, managing director at Bilfinger Salamis, said: “The Core represents an investment for the next 20 years, symbolising our commitment to supporting our clients in the North Sea with the maintenance, modifications and operations services they need, while creating new opportunities to accelerate and deliver our digital solutions.

“Like every business in the sector, we’re focused on growing our footprint in renewable energy and this hub positions us well to deliver the services energy companies and contractors need.

“Located close to the industry’s key transport links, we look forward to the impact this new facility will have in supporting our clients as the sectors we work in recover.”

The firm is one of the UK’s top providers of integrated services to the onshore and offshore oil and gas industry and energy sectors, providing partners with modifications, maintenance and operations support across the asset lifecycle.

The business, which has supported the UK’s oil and gas industry for almost 50 years, employs some 1,800 people from bases in Aberdeen, Groningen, Esbjerg and Great Yarmouth. It is part of German industrial services provider Bilfinger SE.
