Music: The Beat

Whether you know them as The English Beat, The British Beat or just The Beat this veteran ska and two tone band have just as much energy today as they did when they formed in Birmingham during the late 1970s. In the run up to the release of their first studio album in over three decades later this year, the outfit (currently known as The English Beat starring Dave Wakeling) are embarking on a lengthy tour of the UK and North America. Of course they couldn’t resist stopping off in Scotland for a performance at Glasgow’s O2 ABC.

Theatre: Sunset Boulevard

Based on Billy Wilder’s 1950 black comedy meets film noir of the same name, Sunset Boulevard the musical comes to Aberdeen tonight. Performed by local amateur dramatics company Leading Lights, the Andrew Lloyd Webber adaptation follows the dysfunctional relationship between young screenwriter Joe Gillis and ageing former movie star Norma Desmond, all set in 1950s Hollywood.

Comedy: So… That Was September

Trio Mark Nelson, Keir McAllister and Vladimir McTavish are back at The Stand this evening with their unique brand of satirical political comedy, focussing on Scotland post-referendum. You’ll also be treated to Vladimir McTavish’s solo stand-up show, fresh from the Fringe. Hailed by many as Scotland’s best satirical comedian, McTavish will continue on a similar theme, taking a wry look back at key moments in modern Scotland’s history.

Exhibition: A Passion for Print

Chosen by famous artist, printmaker and University of Dundee Honorary Research Fellow Jim Pattison, ‘A Passion for Print’ is a unique exhibition for Print Festival Scotland. Pattison has selected a wide range of prints from the University’s collection - including works by Ken Currie, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Salvador Dali - some of which date back as far as 1730. Don’t miss your chance to see this special collection in person before the exhibition closes on September 26.

Film: Landfill Harmonic

A one-off opportunity to see inspiring documentary Landfill Harmonic about a youth music group living in the slums of Paraguay who create and play instruments made from recycled rubbish. Eye-opening but uplifting, the film is a reminder of both the healing power of music and the resilience of human beings. The screening will be followed by a conversation about implementing creative and effective personal action.
