What’s on: Five things to do in Edinburgh 28/7/2012

1 MUSIC: World Jazz Orchestra  Celebrating the world-wide appeal of jazz, a unique Jazz Big Band comes together, under the direction of Scotland’s most celebrated jazz musician, Joe Temperley, to play a Duke Ellington programme that features some of his rarest and greatest work and, of course, some of his greatest hits. They’ll play music from Black, Brown And Beige, The Latin American Suite, The Far East Suite and The Queen’s Suite, alongside Mood Indigo, Take The A Train and Caravan. The young singer, Cecile Salvant, will join the band to sing some of those great tunes.

2 MUSIC: Salsa Celtica  Lizzard Lounge’s Toby Shippey presents two of his long term Latin flavoured projects. Rumba Caliente are one of the UK’s most exciting and respected salsa soul groups. Led by Shippey and featuring Ricardo Fernandez Pompa from Cuba on lead vocals, this special Jazz Festival international line has been expanded to combine musicians from the heartlands of salsa with some of the most exciting jazz and world musicians from the UK and beyond, including guest vocalists Colombian MC Johan ‘Magico’ Ortiz.

Plus El Tren, who are a fresh project fusing the spirit of Nigerian Afro Beat with the traditions of Latino song and rhythm in an unstoppable dance floor machine.With guest DJs.
