“Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” will see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles as Holmes and Watson in a one-off episode set in Victorian London in 1895.

Co-creator and executive producer Steven Moffat, made the announcement at San Diego Comic Con in July.

“Sherlock on the big screen. For us, it’s a giant leap backwards - into Victorian London. The mean streets of 1895 have never looked so good,” he said.

Moffat has also said of the one-off episode: “We never bothered to explain what we were doing in modern day London. So why do we have to bother explaining what they’re doing in Victorian London, when that’s where they’re supposed to be?”

In addition to the 90-minute episode, cinema goers will be treated to exclusive bonus material, including a guided tour of 221B Baker Street from Steven Moffat and a look behind the scenes at how the special episode was made featuring all the lead cast and crew.

The special also acts as a taster for the eagerly-anticipated fourth series, which won’t reach TV screens until 2017, three years after the third aired
