A TALENTED four-piece folk outfit from the capital, Chasing Owls provide our track of the month. They caught our attention with a spellbinding performance at goNorth this year: beautiful songwriting, accomplished musicianship and powerful boy/girl vocal harmonies, Chasing Owls know their craft and are a very promising band. They've supported acts like Athlete, Noah and The Whale and performed on NME tours as well as finding a fan in Radio 1's Ally McCrae. Edinburgh-based five-piece Letters have been steadily building momentum since the release of their free digital download in February this year and launch their latest single at Henry's Cellar Bar on 7 July. www.wewriteletters.co.uk

Another noteworthy gig in the capital takes place in some rather unusual surroundings, on Gorgie Farm. The gig is part of Oxjam's Takeover series and features Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison with support from I Build Collapsible Mountains on 29 June. The aptly named Dennycassim Festival takes place on 27 and 28 August, just outside Falkirk in, well, Denny. The line up includes the excellent The Ray Summers, MOPP, Jack Butler, The Ok Social Club, Miniature Dinosaurs, Johnny and The Giros and lots more. goNORTH Festival Tour gets under way with the unveiling of their stage at this year's Wickerman Festival on 22-23 July. The excellent line-up includes Chasing Owls, Capitals, Homework, Kobi Onyame, PAWS, I Build Collapsible Mountains, The River 68's, The Black Hand Gang, Indian Red Lopez and The Scottish Enlightenment, to name a few. Kings Tut's host their Summer Nights Festival from 14-28 July; full bands are in the main venue with the addition of an acoustic performance in the bar area downstairs. Headliners include FOUND, Meursault, The Seventeenth Century, Bronto Skylift, Song Of Return and Bwani Junction.

Also at King Tut's Summer Nights Festival are Capitals, who perform for what could be the best night of the festival on 25 July alongside Meursault, Over The Wall and Miaoux Miaoux. The Edinburgh-based Highlanders have also secured themselves a spot on an NME Tour, taking in Club NME in Berlin's Magnet Club on 29 July, as well as playing at The Edge Festival on 26 August with Homework and Plum providing support. The main music programme throughout August at the Edinburgh Fringe, The Edge festival will host over 40 gigs at various venues, from big names like The National, Willy Mason, Panic At The Disco and Soma's birthday bash to breakthrough and emerging acts including The Vaccines, Admiral Fallow and Conquering Animal Sound. Further north in the breathtakingly beautiful Outer Hebrides is the magnificent Heb Celt festival from 13-16 July.
