While our mobile phones are now smart enough to do it automatically, come October 25, we’ll still have to remember to wind all our analogue timepieces back an hour, in line with Greenwich Mean Time.

And if your chronometer collection could do with a refresh, now’s your chance, because the autumn accessories collections have landed and there are some very on-trend watches around - and we’re not talking the kind that Apple makes.

If you’re planning on tapping into the dark romance of the Victoriana trend, then a gleaming metallic or digital watch is going to look seriously anachronistic next to all that black lace and ruffles.

Instead, you need something classic. Match the intricacy of a high-necked lace blouse with an all-black watch that keeps its cogs on display, or go monochrome with a suede strap - the matte texture is a better match to retro styling than shiny leather.

ROSE TO THE OCCASION

Rose gold, the precious metal’s pinkest variety, continues to reign as the fashionista’s jewellery hue of choice - and with good reason; the autumn/winter catwalks were awash with pink, particularly at the pastel end of the spectrum.

Plus, the two go superbly well together, so a rose gold watch, whether chunky or dainty, is a good investment.

Want to hit the double trend jackpot? A rose gold watch with a pale pink strap is pretty much as on-trend as it’s possible to be right now.

As a counterpoint to all that dark, vintage-inspired drama, an altogether more cheerful trend emerged for AW15 accessories, epitomised by cutesy cartoons and kooky animal motifs that populate watch faces.

These conversation pieces are a great way to add interest on those busy days, when all you want to do is throw on your favourite jeans, jumper and coat and get out the door - they’ll raise a smile whenever you check the time.
