DAN Wright – Small from TV’s Big Cook Little Cook – is a Michael Jackson fan. So much so that it has made his life that bit more difficult (but not so much that he won’t riff on those kiddie-fiddling rumours in his title – hey, everyone’s got a show to sell).

Gilded Balloon Teviot (Venue 14)

Star rating: * * *

Who knows whether Wright is exaggerating his ardour for comic effect, but he does begin with a piece of documentary footage which suggests that he needs help with his addiction. He’s not exactly releasing doves outside courtrooms, but when you hear how long he was prepared to queue for a ticket to see his idol, you may have cause for concern.

Wright is affable enough to keep this gig ticking over nicely through the more muted comic moments. His fun wicked streak emerges when he recalls the hell of MJ-related ostracism at high school and, controversially, the eccentric behaviour of his fellow fans in a concert scenario.

If only he had pushed his dorky dance routine further, it might have served as an act of exorcism.
