Theatre review: You Left Me in the Dark, theSpace @ Surgeon’s Hall (Venue 53), Edinburgh

THERE’S a strong start to this play about a love triangle between three nuclear disarmament protestors in what initially feels like a musical parody of hippy-dippy activists and turns into a sombre piece of self-analysing following a suicide.

The few songs are great; Laura Lexx, as the grieving ex-girlfriend, has a beautiful voice and is well accompanied by fellow cast members David Pearce (who also plays guitar) and Marie Rabe. Inspired by Chekhov’s The Seagull, the jovial mood doesn’t last long and ends up feeling like a sadly unexplored prelude to the predictable angsty melodrama that follows.

Until 25 August. Today 4:05pm.
