Theatre review: Not My Cup Of Tea, theSpace on the Mile (Venue 39), Edinburgh

Many might find themselves agreeing with that title. A production which grasps at numerous high-minded subjects without ever really tackling one of them sufficiently, it’s set on a country commune in 1970, where a bunch of privileged hippies are seeking to forge an alternative way of living.

However, their capitalism-denouncing revolution fails to convince, seeming to consist of busking for money, subsistence farming and making nudge-nudge references to having had group sex. The play coasts along with barely a fluctuation in tone or urgency, confusing actors raising their voices and gritting their teeth with an increase in emotional intensity, serving only to cheapen the weightier subjects when they do arise.
