Theatre review: Hunt and Darton Cafe, St Mary’s Street

IMAGINE playing “restaurant” with your baby sisters. Now imagine they opened a restaurant off the Royal Mile and you have Hunt & Darton Cafe.

This is a “working restaurant as art”, make believe made real.

Hunt and Darton themselves are eager but slightly intense, scolding you for not doing things properly. Although adults, they have a childlike fixation on the workings of the restaurant. Everything from the daily profits to customer complaints are solemnly marked on a blackboard.

The food, while reasonably priced, isn’t great. As a cafe, Hunt & Darton is so-so, but this is a must-visit Fringe experience.
