Theatre review: Hinge Presents: Scooped, Hill Street Theatre (Venue 41), Edinburgh

DESPITE its title, this isn’t yet another take on the Leveson Inquiry. Three grey-faced imps create and manipulate characters to devise a story about a country house mystery in order to make the perfect “headline”.

They can’t decide which direction to take the plot in, however, and worry that there’s not enough going on. They’re right, because though there are some clever scenes, ultimately the show resorts to a cop-out ending which resolves nothing.

The newspaper references don’t seem to fit: this is more about the making of fiction than manipulation of fact. It’s confidently performed by a young cast who show talent but the piece isn’t focused enough to achieve the deconstruction of theatrical cliché it aims for.
