Theatre review: And They Played Shangalang, The Stand 3, York Place

DOO wop be dooby do ay! The words of the catchy Bay City Rollers smash hit ring round The Stand 3 during local company Craft Theatre’s positive, punchy and poignant tale of youth hysteria in 1970s Edinburgh.

Written and produced by Derek Douglas, and directed by Liam Rudden, the show tells Jim’s story of youth, love, loss and laughter as he narrates the events that made him the man he became.

We join him through his school years and into early adulthood as he encounters many life firsts – girls, music, death and family feuds.

The strong ensemble cast shine, taking full advantage of the opportunity to demonstrate their various talents. Packed with musical numbers, they showcase strong vocal abilities, particularly in a show-stopping rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Complicated dance routines are tackled with ease. Add some top class comic performances and strong emotion and you have the full package.

Seventies child or not, you’re sure to have a rockin’ time.
