Theatre review: 7 Days Drunk, Glasgow Arches

BRYONY Kimmings’ relationship with alcohol began, rather messily, in childhood. And while the performance artist isn’t an alcoholic, she’s convinced of the link between drinking and creativity.

To test this theory, she conducted an experiment monitored by a panel of experts, including a GP, neuroscientist and psychologist, whereby she drank steadily for nine hours each day, danced, sang and generally found ways to express herself. The process was recorded and the clips feature in this intriguing, playful production.

Everything was conceived under the influence of vodka and cranberry juice, but is performed stone cold sober.

Although Kimmings reflects upon various inebriated luminaries, from Jim Morrison to Van Gogh, and finds herself the lowliest form of piss artist, she doesn’t arrive at any profound conclusions.

Ultimately, we the audience must be the judge, and on this basis she proves herself an attractive drinking companion. A wry, talented storyteller with a dry, self-lacerating wit and sharp timing, her easy charisma is supplemented by manic, self-deprecating episodes of physical exuberance and a keen sense of mischief.

Yet, while 7 Day Drunk is never quite as revealing or revelatory as one might hope, it is unquestionably fun.
