Theatre Preview: The Yeomen of the Guard, King’s Theatre

IT’s a busy time for the Capital’s amateur entertainers this week, and today the focus shifts to EDGAS - The Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society, who open at The King’s tonight with their latest production of The Yeomen Of The Guard.

The most serious of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, The Yeomen of the Guard is set amid the colourful pageantry of the Tower of London.

A story of high drama and romance, complete with tragic ending, it tells the story of strolling jester Jack Point, who ‘falls insensible’ when he loses the love of his life, Elsie Maynard, to his rival.

The Yeomen Of The Guard, which premiered in October 1888, finds WS Gilbert at the top of his game, adapting his usual patter songs, comedy duets and tongue-twisting dialogue to reflect the darker atmosphere of deception and intrigue within the sombre walls of the Tower.

All this, mingled with one of Arthur Sullivan’s most impressive scores, guarantees an evening of theatrical magic.

The Yeomen of the Guard, King’s Theatre, Leven Street, tonight-Saturday, 7.30pm (Saturday matinee 2.30pm), £12-£21, 0131-529 600
