Theatre Preview: Date With Destiny, Saughtonhall Church

EVENING News Drama Award winners Saughtonhall Drama Group also return to the stage tonight, when they present Karen Doling’s romantic comedy Date With Destiny.

There is still a place for the personal touch in the dating agency business, at least so believes Mrs White, the owner of long established Destiny Dating.

Up to now, she has persevered with meeting all her clients rather than relying on on-line systems.

Finally, however, Destiny Dating has moved into the modern world by installing a computer containing all the information about prospective partners. But catastrophe looms when the computer crashes on the very night that introductions are to take place.

Further complicating the matter is the fact that Destiny Dating is based above a Relate Office, an irony not lost on long-suffering secretary Marian, played by Estelle Bryce.

As she books in new clients, the humour of the coincidence has long since deserted her - especially now.

Following an advertising campaign in the local paper to drum up new business, a number of new clients book in to find their perfect partner, including Mr Anthony, played by Alan Moonie, and Micky Darcy and Cleo Minnie, played by real-life husband and wife Murray and Judith Petrie. Making her debut as a director, Elizabeth Swinburne sayss, “When undertaking casting I had to put aside the fact that Judith and Murray were married.

“This is a comedy about the characters, a key element being that they do not know each other and are then brought together.

“Of course, being a comedy there are some mishaps and misunderstandings along the way.”
