Review: World War Wonderful! SpaceCabaret @ 54

Meet the Wonderful Sisters – dutiful Gloria, ditsy Fanny and the frankly ruthless Ruth – a singing sorority who could give those Andrews and Beverley Sisters a run for their war chest with their spot-on harmonies and cutesy choreography.***

Ever since the success of their debut album Peace Is For Pussies, they haven’t missed an invitation to a war yet. But there is conflict within their own camp and their professed love of democracy is to be sorely tested.

The trio’s singing is genuinely delightful and their lyrics deliciously dark. One gleeful number about an amputee beau is swiftly followed by a sweet little torture-porn ditty. Though the style is pure perky Second World War, the target of their satire is the ever-lucrative business of war. “Every time you get shot, we thank you,” they trill.

World War Wonderful! unravels a little as it progresses. The girls are better singers than they are comedians and some of their inter-song routines fall a little flat, and a musical theatre ballad jars with the pastiche of the rest of the show. But it is still worth rallying the troops for this fun forces entertainment.
